Hamming it up for Christmas!

Luckily I remembered before going to bed last night to soak the ham. It was salt cured so it had not been in the fridge since we bought it at our first supermarket shop in Grenada! We thought it was a brilliant idea. I unwrapped the ham from its hessian and cling film only to discover it covered in mould which really put us off! Luckily the cover said it would be mouldy and we had to scrub all the greasy mould off. Devon who was cleaning all the rust off the boat In our first week, spotted it and told us that it was delicious and how we should cook it. I started at breakfast cooking the ham, basically we had to bring it to the boil 3 times, changing the water and simmering for an hour each time. Then remove the skin, glaze and roast it for half an hour. This took most of the day in between a few drinks, and a big breakfast.

Our token Christmas decorations

Han joined us for the unwrapping of presents which was great fun to have her join in the festivities. Sounded like they are having a great time at camp. The afternoon was spent enjoying the breeze at the front of the boat under the new awning I made with our kanga cloths from Zanzibar.

We finally got to eat the ham at 8pm when it was bearable to eat a hot roast. Thank goodness for the honey, mustard and clove glaze as that and the roast potatoes were the best bit. It was tasty but still way too salty. As we were so remote we tossed the remainder, still a considerable chunk overboard. We did hear a lot of big splashes not long afterwards and we were pleased to be sharing our Christmas meal with the meat eating creatures of the sea. And that was Christmas done ……and the easiest clean up!

i can’t resist these cloud shots!
