Tuesday 6 June - early birthday lunch

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

We planned to celebrate Rowan's birthday today by taking Greg and Jan out for lunch as they had taken us to Nobu on Barbuda (Robert de Niro's fancy development on a remote pristine, long white beach, called princess Diana's beach), for Greg's birthday a couple of years ago. I don't think there is an equivalent expensive restaurant here thankfully! We had planned to set off tomorrow to explore some of the Society islands, but there are big winds and we are nervous about getting back into a marina in time for our flights. Getting accurate weather forecasts that far out is tricky, plus the two marinas here in Tahiti will fill up with yachts from the Tuamotus as the wind is predicted to be even stronger there as they have very little protection. The latest plan is we are just going to leave the boat here in this marina for the 3 months we are away, so we will stay put, we just don't have to stress for the last two weeks. We may even see if we can fly back earlier. Thankfully there seems to be no issue with rats so far!!

We invited Glen and Oana to join us. Rowan had booked a restaurant at a seafront resort. We landed up having a very long boozy lunch on a lovely airy verandah, with good food and plenty of pink bubbles. It was about 12 kms out of town, so it felt very relaxing being away from the hustle and bustle of town. We drank far more than I'm used to, much more than a G&T! We all crashed back on our boats for a late afternoon siesta. We reconvened on PolePole for a game of Farkle, a dice game. Jan and Oanna brought over nibbles, we literally rolled into bed, I can't remember when I last ate so much.
