Tuesday 3 December – enjoying the Pohutukawa tree’s Christmas flowering

After breakfast we set off to the ferry harbour to drop Roy and Libby off so that they could catch the ferry back to Auckland. After getting a few toots to get out the bloody way by two ferries, we gave up trying to get to the harbour wall, and went and anchored, taking them in on the dinghy.

We were feeling a little exhausted so we went around to the south side of Waihike island and found a lovely bay to anchor in. Later in the afternoon, in glorious weather, we took JeldiJeldi into the beach. We went for a wonderful coastal path walk, under some enormous Pohutukawa trees all in their vivid red blossom. These trees cling on to the sides of the cliffs, and seem to be salt resistant with their waxy leaves. They are indigenous trees and are now actively protected. It landed up being a good 7km walk up and down to endless beaches, passing some extremely wealthy properties, many competing with bigger and bigger outdoor sculptures! We managed to do a circular walk heading inland and onto a road for a little while before dropping straight back to the beach where we were relieved to find JeldiJeldi. We had left her on her little anchor out in the water, so that we did not get caught out like yesterday!

Kindred Spirits a Kiwi Catamaran we met in Fiji came into the anchorage, while we were wanting a quiet alcohol free night in, they were roaring around in their tender trying to get their two year old to sleep!
