Thursday 3 October – another Sevusevu at Somosomo

No wind again, so it was a motor up to our next stop Somosomo, where we needed to do Sevusevu. As soon as we got to the beach we were greeted by some kids who were quickly usurped by a very camp guy who claimed to be the island tourist guide. We told the kids to stick with us and were taken to the chief’s house where we handed over our Kava for the Sevusevu. His enormous wife was the interpreter, and was so sweet and charming, effusively welcoming us to the village. We were taken around the village and shown the usual …… local crafts, the church, village drums and walkways. We managed to dismiss our guide and wandered around for a while with the kids, apparently a half day at school.

We headed back to Polepole to go and snorkel on a reef that Rowan had read up on, some lovely patches of colourful coral and other areas where it is really on the decline. The sun was bright, no clouds so the colours really popped, hundreds of small blue fish hiding in branchy bits of coral, sadly no GoPro today either. Rowan’s old Go Pro broke and his new rip off version needs setting up. Hannah adopted some coral in Moorea French Polynesia, for my birthday, from a charity called coralgardeners.org. They grow the coral and then go and plant it on reefs, amazingly I got an email today to say my coral had grown to the right size and has been taken to the Savuti nursery in Malolo in Fiji, which is just where we have come from. How fitting the nursery is called Savuti, a famous game area in Botswana!

We decided to move PolePole to the bay around the corner near where we had snorkelled, it has a stunning white beach and really picturesque. We took some beers to the beach and had sundown drinks on the gorgeous beach. Tim is a master chef and cooked us an amazing chicken curry for supper, luckily he really enjoys being in the kitchen.
