Thursday 20 June – Wind and boat speed keep us all happy

We are all very happy that as the sun rose the winds picked up and we had a glorious full day of sailing with wind speed consistently in the high teens. We were averaging about 9 knots boat speed which has certainly shortened the passage as we covered good miles today. Shifts are all going well and everybody is in very good spirits. Shorts are now the order of the day, as every day is getting warmer.

We didn’t have many sail changes today, we had Sporty Spice (Code Zero sail) out for a while but when the winds got over 20 knots we took her down and have had Posh Spice (Jib) up for the rest of the day and still making good speed.

We had a very colourful sunset with our mocktails in the evening, with lots of story telling. We introduced the crew to South African made boerewors (sausage), with baked potatoes cooked perfectly in my new little combi air fryer oven, and an enormous salad. The boerewors went down very well. There are so many South African products in New Zealand it was incredible buying so many nostalgic goodies, including very good biltong, rusks, Liquifruit Lichi juice, and Mrs Balls chutney!

The moon looks almost full, so good for the night watches

Another stunning sunset

The colours of the sunset get more and more intense

It’s early to bed while we are all doing shifts, just the noise of the water gurgling by and no engines makes it very peaceful.

I forgot to add Rowan’s photo of me up the top of the mast on Saturday!
