Thursday 16 February – Han’s arrival comes with a downpour!

Widge and Edmund left the boat today, they were joining Janey and Jonny on a snorkel trip to Kicker Rock, so we caught a taxi in early with them, with all their packed bags. Today is the start of the carnival, we had breakfast in town and watched a bit of the town parade, the start of their fiesta celebrations for Galapagos Day. It was a pretty noisy and very long parade with businesses interspersed with naval/military groups, a few kids doing drum majorettes in between. It was really hot and everyone looked a little wilted. Rowan went to the hardware shop to make a spiked barricade against the sea lions, copying a design from Herman the German, big nails in a plank of wood.

We headed back to the boat to get through an enormous pile of laundry before Han arrived. Luckily we got 4 loads done, endless sheets and towels, before the rain clouds appeared. Such excitement as Han and her friend Megan (from Maun in Botswana), arrived at lunch time in a water taxi in the middle of an almighty downpour. Poor things boarded absolutely drenched with all their luggage soaking. They will be with us all the way through to the Tuamotu Islands, so they had quite a bit of stuff including camping gear!

Everyone was soaked by the time we were all safely in the cockpit with all their luggage and the last of the laundry drying.

Early evening we headed to shore to join the Arc happy hour session and then we dragged poor Han and Megan out for dinner with a the Dutch Arc boat Pippin, whose daughter Fleur is also doing the crossing with them. It was a long day for them.
