Thursday 12 December – commiserating with the Brit’s storm Darrah, rain all day

We knew it was going to be a rainy grey day and it did not disappoint! As it was dead calm I did some laundry and hung it up in the guest cabin which gets really warm when the lithium batteries are charging! I have to say we rather enjoyed the day, it really was different to have a solid grey day.

The highlight of the day was watching all the birds around us. The cutest is the Little Blue Penguin (kororā) which is the world’s smallest penguin. They are a medium to dark blue with a white underbelly, they are just over 25cm high and apparently weigh around 1kg. Yet they are capable of travelling as far as 25km offshore! Their current conservation status is at risk/in decline. Threats to the little blue penguin include dogs and other predators, entanglement in fishing lines and other debris, and water clarity, because penguins use their eyes to hunt. A couple were bobbing around the boat in their squat fat little bodies, quite comical diving down for quite a while looking for their next feed.

Another catamaran arrived in the bay yesterday afternoon, so we invited them over for drinks. Rowan had googled their boat name Aristo, which gave all their details. When they came over they had obviously googled us, I guess it is what all the yachties do, they also stalked Rowan and knew quite a bit about us. He is retired, they are both on second marriages and have started this sailing adventure together even though he gets chronically seasick! Lots of stories to exchange. I had a lamb stew in the slow cooker that was smelling very enticing, we finally ate it after 9pm, when they had left.
