Thursday 11 July – more snorkelling, caves and bat watching

The day was a little overcast, so our snorkelling in and out the islands around here was not in the best light. We saw some wonderful colourful fan coral, reddish colour with bright blue fish wish was interesting. We explored the area where we first anchored and got into a pickle with the anchor, there was some nice coral, but a lot of dead destroyed areas. We found another cave to swim into. As this one is so easily accessible it has been horribly graffitied which is sad……all the way out here!

First snorkelling site between the islands

Colourful fan coral

Strange looking bits of coral sticking out the water

Second snorkelling spot

Little fish at the entrance to the cave that we have not seen before

Exploring all the hundreds of little inlets

The couple from Hijacker invited us to join them and two other boats, for drinks in the mangroves to watch the bats. We managed to squeeze all the dinghies through some mangrove roots into a little clearing much closer to the bats. We had not been there long, I had just got a tray out for snacks when a big poop fell right in the middle of the tray, seconds later one on me, and one of the other men. I thought the evening was going to be miserable being bombed by bat shit, but luckily that was it and they never touched us again. It was amazing to see them so close up getting ready to go insect hunting, we think they must limber up flying around for a while near where they are roosting and as soon as the sun sets they take off. The other two boats Scoots and Mintaka, are New Zealanders, they come up here to escape the Kiwi winter. It was a very enjoyable gathering.

I just love their bat shapes

Closer up
