Thursday 1 June – hiking up to a waterfall

Glen and Oana have a hire car and invited us to join them on a hike up to a waterfall. We readily accepted but had the generator guys coming to check out our salt damaged generator at 9am. Needless to say it all ran a bit late but the very switched on engineers gave their verdict that it just needs a clean and should be fine.

We had a very good walk, quite a steep climb up through mainly pine forests which I was not expecting, it reminded me of the Redwood forests of California. It was a great path, nice and clear even if it was straight up. About 3/4 of the way down we diverted to the waterfall and then took the route down the stream. It was stunning scenery, very diverse indigenous vegetation, so much more interesting than the pine forests. Quite a challenging slippery route, with lots of crossing of streams, but very well done with rope on all the steep rather treacherous areas. It was a very enjoyable walk. On the way we had stopped at a patisserie and bought lunch so on our return we went and had a picnic next to the sea which was very pleasant and tasty.

Glen and Oana had one more thing they wanted to do before handing the car back which was to go to a Belvedere on a peninsular further around the island. It was great to see more of the island. We spotted Giorgio (Italian heart surgeon) and Jan ‘s boat in the bay next to an old port town.

We climbed up and up and got to the end of the road where we did have a great view point. It was interesting to see the rural countryside. Vivid green pastures with some dairy cows that looked like it could have been Devon. It was a very good view, and all smartly laid out. There were no tourists, just 3 local young girls all sitting in sleeping bags making floral head dresses. It definitely was a degree or two cooler up here.

We got back to PolePole and felt exhausted from a day out, we didn’t last long before dropping off.
