Sunday 15 March – walk around the island

We had seen a sign that said we could walk around the island on the beach between mid and low tide. A quick breakfast and we were off on our walk to beat the midday heat. We started well passing the few resorts in front of us, they all look really nice and laid back. We had not gone that far when we realised we were not going to make it around a headland in front of us, the tide was way beyond mid tide. We found a path up the hill, there was a good view from the top but not an obvious path down the other side. We met 3 ladies carrying water coming up the hill the other way, amazingly balancing it on their heads up such a climb. They told us we could go down. We passed quite a lot of livestock, goats and water buffalo which have a very impressive white circle around their bottoms. They must be a certain type of water buffalo with that marking and some are brown, they have straight sharp horns so actually look more like a buck. Our rough path took us to the back of another resort, it was a bit of a scramble getting through fences and a very overgrown path, we landed up coming out behind the resorts very messy noisy generator. There were a surprising amount of people at the resort, it looked slightly neglected. We pressed on along the beach and managed to get the rest of the way around without too much difficulty, a couple of places requited wading and avoiding rocks, it was a good walk.

We spent the rest of the afternoon under the awning trying to catch the breeze. Everyone else went and snorkelled the reef we did yesterday again, the clarity was apparently a bit better, and a turtle was spotted which is always nice. In the evening we went out for supper at the resort in front of us called Amahelia. We had a very good meal and felt we deserved it after our good walk. Everywhere is so quiet, just one or two guests, its definitely low season.
