Sunday 13 July – lazy day on the beach

We decided to go to the beach in our anchorage and have a read in a nice cool shady spot. It was blissful as it was so hot in the sun, however we had to move 3 or 4 times because of ants! The Eco resort restaurant was closed for lunch, but turns out the bungalows next door are separate, owned by brothers, and they were open. We went for a cold beer and decided to stay for lunch. They had two young female guests who baked all day on the beach, in the full sun in the skimpiest of bikinis. We never worked out where they were from, they were always face down on the beach. They will be sore tomorrow no doubt.

The owner came to chat to us, also a very eloquent man in his 50’s, with his wife doing the cooking and their cute young daughter chasing young chicks through the restaurant. Our expectations were pretty low, we opted for steak and chips, the steak was tasty, it had a very good sauce with some nicely cooked vegetables. It was very interesting hearing their story, he was in the road building business, 15 years ago his grandfather gave his 3 grandkids each a block of land on the beach here. They all have bungalows to rent out, but the downturn is clearly pinching. This guy luckily still has his road making business.

We headed back to the boat so Rowan could have his afternoon nap before we went and had drinks on Lela. Their boat is amazing, Clif bought it as a wreck, then got it completely restored and upgraded in Thailand. They have made some impressive changes. Their area between the two hulls (our saloon) is divided in two, one side has a proper wooden double bed and the other side is their sitting room just like in a house, with carpets, tv and comfy sofas. Their bed basically hangs over the hull which contains their bathroom in one end and storage cupboards in the other. The other hull has the kitchen which is all opened up to the sitting area, the crew cabin one end and a walk in pantry with a normal stand up big fridge. Amazingly different and obviously very comfortable to live in.

We were back at PolePole by 8pm as we have an early-ish start tomorrow for our 60 mile passage to the Banks Islands.

Looking up I noticed this epiphyte with its brown leaves holding the plant onto the trunk

Different spot on the beach as the ants got to us

The restaurant was in a lovely position and lovely and cool, sadly for them nobody else eating
