Saturday 30 August – rain and searing heat

The forecast was for rainy squalls, in many ways it was a relief from the intense heat. Rowan thinks it is hotter as we are getting closer to the equator. The squalls seem to suck away every breathe of air before they arrive which is stifling, making us sweat profusely!

We went for a snorkel between squalls, heading in the other direction to yesterday. Sadly the water was so hot in the shallower areas it was really unpleasant, it makes the visibility really poor. There were some nice pieces of big coral, but loads looks in such bad condition, sadly it must have been magnificent once upon a time. We saw loads of colourful clams, some embedded in the middle of spiky antler coral which was unusual. Loads of big tree trunks in the water, these islands are definitely sinking under the water. I saw one small reef shark from the dinghy, I can’t believe they like the water that hot. We also saw another big Napoleon wrasse with his bulbous nose, always fun to see. Quite a few fish but not abundant.

We had planned to go and walk around a different island hoping for no dogs, but the rain came and blew that plan away. We had a nasty storm with lightning in the evening, we unplugged all antennae and hoped for the best sitting there as a prime lightning conductor! Luckily it came within a couple of miles and no nearer. The tension is rather nerve wracking.

The water is an incredible colour
