Saturday 12 July – Champagne beach relaxing

We went around to Champagne beach in JeldiJeldi, we had to skirt a big piece of reef to get there. I was very relieved we did not try and anchor here in PolePole as it looks a lot trickier than where we are. It is a magnificent big beach with talcum powder fine white sand. The visibility has not been good for snorkelling, the hot sea water mixing with the cold creates a layer of blurry water. Nowhere looked like stunning coral so we decided to keep out the water again. The beach has enormous trees on it with low slung branches creating deliciously cool places to lie down and read!

We had invited Lela to join us for lunch at the restaurant here. They walked across with their crew, Anthony. They had a bit of a snorkel and it was alright but not the greatest. There were a few people on the beach, more than usual as it is a Saturday. Lovely to see plenty of locals having a wonderful time in the sea too. There was one other table of guests at the only restaurant, and the beach bar looks like it has been closed for ages. Everyone on Lela is vegetarian and Anthony is a vegan, all he could eat was chips! Clif and Melody shared some fish which they allow themselves occasionally. Rowan had an enormous Coconut Crab, after the German Trinity boat told us about catching hepatitis from crabs, Rowan asked for it to be well cooked. I think they took him literally as it was extremely well cooked. I asked for chicken and got 3 tiny legs! The chips were really good though, cooked in lard, I hope the Vegan in our midst did not rumble that!

Evenings have been fun catching up on Wimbledon, what a walkover the ladies’ final was, especially as Anisimova’s game against Sabalenka was so brilliant.

Champagne beach with the restaurant

The jetty seems to mean bigger boats must come in here sometimes

Incredibly big trees on the beach with ancient metal remains of past industry

Chillaxing in the cool shade, boiling hot in the sun

Beach from the other side

A stunning bay

I love these enormous low hanging branches covered in epiphytes, they look so heavy goodness knows how they stay up

More relaxing……I’m actually trying to give an idea of the low hanging branches
