I was very surprised to hear that I had blissfully slept through a big storm, both Rowan and Phoebe were up during the night checking on things and getting Stinky off the roof in case she slid into the sea! We left before breakfast as the sky was looking quite threatening, easier to get the the anchor up not in pouring rain! We were heading for the island of Escudo de Veraguas, which Rowan has read about and looks stunning. However it is only an anchorage in calm conditions. The weather looked perfect, with winds in the right direction to get back to San Blas. This is a weather window you have to wait for as it is not the normal Trade wind direction.

Stormy clouds

Crazy local fisherman in the middle of big seas in their tiny boat
We got the main sails up in gentle winds and pootled our way along in a huge swell. Then the wind died, much to Rowan’s frustration! We finally resorted to the engines and got to the island mid afternoon in very dark rainy weather. The island looks fascinating, unpopulated except for skin divers from an indigenous tribe. We went around the corner from the main anchorage to get a bit more protection. There wasn’t a boat in sight. The island has a section of dramatic rock cliffs that have created all sorts of coves, some with little beaches. We hope for better weather tomorrow to explore. It was quite bumpy seas but nothing bad, the anchor was solid, Rowan swum over it and was very pleased with the way it had dug into the sand.

At least we arrived in good weather

I made a butternut curry for supper that went down well, as did our last episode of White Lotus!
