Monday 8 July – A batty day

Now I’m totally convinced we are safely anchored I am sleeping like a log! I got a whole lot of washing done, the water is calm enough for our washing machine to work. Johnathan and his wife came over for a coffee and chat, catching us mid breakfast at nearly 11am which was embarrassing, but quite normal for us as we generally skip lunch. They have been doing aid work here for the past 10 years and know the area very well, so Rowan was picking his brains. He flew helicopters for the British Fleet Air Arm many years ago, and then moved to California where he flew hot air balloons over Disneyland, which is where he met his American wife. It was a long coffee I think they left around 2pm!

Rowan got the paddle board all pumped up and managed to not get blown away

Our view from the back of PolePole, thick forest with the noise of Barking Pigeons, the sound echoes around the crater, which is just lovely. We initially thought it sounded like monkeys. It is a little crater Oasis all to ourselves. It would make a perfect drone shot, but for some reason Rowan’s drone has gone on the blink. No photos really do it justice.

We were told about the area where we could see all the bats take off at sunset. We packed the cooler bag with beers and crisps and headed into the warren of eroded limestone rocks. We found the spot, got our trusty little dinghy anchor out, that Rowan loves, and settled down for a glorious sunset watching the bats set off for a night of feeding. It started with a few leaving, and over half an hour, more and more left their perches in the tree. It was dramatic seeing so many bats in the sky, a bit Alfred Hitchcock like at times! It was rounded off magnificently with a gorgeous sunset with a sliver of a moon shining through. Really stunning as the sky performed an ever changing twilight colour display.

Entrance to the waterway where the bats are

We spot the bats hanging in the trees

The bats slowly start coming out

It gets busier and busier

Spot the sliver of moon….. and bats!

The sky kept changing colour, apologies for so many photos

Heading home almost in the dark
