It was not a restful night, we were up and down out of bed getting Baby Spice down, motoring, avoiding lightening storms, getting sails back up. We were at the entrance to Kauehi at 6am, it looked ok and even though the original plan was to get through at midday so we had the sun up high to navigate our way across the atoll, we decided to go for it. The passage through had the same 4 knots of current, but it all went smoothly. Rowan found a remote anchorage down south that looked like the way was bommie free. Megan and I sat up front on look out which was pretty difficult with the sun angle, luckily it was pretty bommie free, the only bommie Rowan found was on google maps and it was the only one that we noticed. The two nice anchorages both had boats in them. We moved further along to an area of Palm trees to get a bit more protection from the wind which has been in the high teens. It is stunningly clear water and very picturesque.
We had a late breakfast and then did a bit of bottom scrubbing which has managed to grow a green mane again. A few Arc boats coming to this atoll spotted us and asked to join us, 3 boats arrived. Then the heavens opened and the rest of the day was almost a white out of rain. It gave the boat a wonderful fresh water wash down and it was also a welcome relief to the heat. We were all pretty exhausted and relieved we could all get an early night. There was lightening all around us but thankfully in the distance. We had one brilliant bit of forked lightening like I haven’t seen since living in Joburg all those years ago!
