Last trip to the Cays

The doctor came to the marina at 7am to do our PCR test which was a very rude start to my Sunday morning, I’m used to lounging in bed reading the Sunday papers with endless cups of tea! We are getting accustomed to the test’s weird tickle of the brain via the nostrils, never that pleasant. It had to be that early so the test could get on the ferry to St Vincent, in time for a 24 hour result. Very efficient!

Leaving Sandy Lane marina

We are now committed to leaving for St Lucia on Tuesday morning. We debated what we most wanted to do in our last 24 hours and decided it was to be back in the Tobago Cays, with a last good snorkel, and a lobster dinner with Romeo and Juliet on the beach.

We took a mooring ball in the cut between the two islands to have a calm night. We have mastered picking up the ball and putting the the second rope on. It went like clockwork for the first time ever! Even Romeo was impressed! We decided that the best snorkelling by far is where we have been the previous few days. We headed out in JeldiJeldi, crossing Snake channel that we negotiated in PolePole yesterday. With the sun out for the entire time, we had a great long snorkel. Saw a couple of sharks, one appeared asleep just lying on the seabed and never budged. We saw loads of different types of fish and had some very quizzy big barracuda tailing us.

Taking the dinghy back to Windward bay to snorkel there

Resting shark…….pretty big

Elkhorn coral

Very smart white spotted filefish, hard to photograph, but they have huge eyes, a pouting mouth full of teeth and see through fins

Baracuda

Too deep to do justice to the colour

Amazing shell Rowan found, when we turned it over it almost looked like a tortoise shell

This is like a Sand Dollar but much thicker

There were 7 boats in the cut, including the Swedish couple we had dinner with. They had lobster last night so did not want to have it again. It was a delicious feast of fresh lobster cooked to perfection by Juliet, nice and juicy. We were flabbergasted to hear Juliet has a 20 year old son at Oxford Brooks. He was the result of a relationship with a German sailor! Romeo and Juliet have 4 kids together and each has a child from previous relationships. Things are so tough for them with so little tourist trade, the season winds up after Easter, but they are endlessly cheerful. It was a magical last night at the Cays.
