Kirbys on board

It was good to finally get the Kirbys on board, they tried to visit us in 2020 but Covid kiboshed us getting to Antigua. We had lots of news to catch up on and they had brought out loads of bits and pieces for us, including most importantly a new pepper grinder! Small, squat and very heavy it caused airport security a few headaches.

Bonaire has buoys all around the leeward side of the island for snorkelling and diving as you are not allowed to use an anchor anywhere, which is such great news. We went and snorkelled a couple of hundred meters up the coast from the marina and it was fantastic. The coral and fish life was amazing. There is a shelf of about 20-50m wide all along the coast that is aquamarine blue as it is shallow, and then a drop off into dark waters of about 80 meters deep. The island has preserved the coast line as a reserve since the 70’s and it certainly seems to have paid off. The fish were so un afraid and a turtle was swimming with us for ages completely unworried by us.

We did a long hot walk to a supermarket in the afternoon to stock up for the rest of the Easter week end. Van Den Tweels was a great supermarket. Three feral dogs had followed Stella and I all the way from town to the supermarket, about 1.5kms out of town. We were gobsmacked to find them waiting for us at when we finished shopping, they walked all the way back to the dock with us. Causing havoc with traffic, other dogs and iguanas along the way!

We went out for a very jolly Mexican meal in the evening, it was very atmospheric, the food was fine but nothing exciting.

Stella and Matt
