Incredibly we never saw another boat all day – just a whale!

A nice gentle start to the day. Last night went well except the wind died on my watch and I didn’t want to start the engines as Rowan was so tired I thought he could do with a quiet sleep. It had me on my toes as the boat finds it quite difficult to steer when there is no wind, but luckily leaving behind the land mass of Martinique brought the wind back.

A very gentle cloudy day of sailing, which made it cool and relaxing, just what we needed. We did have to do a bit of motoring when the wind died away, otherwise it would turn into a 5 day journey and we would miss Luke!

The Boobies have been great company today. A bit like seagulls following tractors ploughing, they boobies love swooping around Polepole and diving into the sea around us. We obviously disturb the fish, we could see the poor fish jumping like crazy as they dive in. They often don’t stop in the water and keep whizzing straight through the water doing a shallow dive and out again.

Late afternoon we were enjoying the sunset behind the clouds. No wind so we were sitting on the side of the boat admiring the island of Dominica when I spotted this enormous black thing in the water. Luckily Rowan saw it as it came up again and we spotted it’s fin. It was a whale about 30 m away. So funny we haven’t spotted a single boat today, not even a fishing boat. We were just commenting on this when we saw the whale. So nice to know they are out there, just surprised we’ve seen so few dolphins. Anyhow it was a great exciting way to end the day. No photos sadly.

On my night shift I got great signal passing Guadalupe also part of France so great mobile reception for doing my blog.
