Bye bye Barbuda

Prompt departure as we were anticipating a slow crossing back to Antigua as the wind has died. Rowan had managed to find a shackle to fit the Gennaker sail, we managed to get it out of the locker and hoisted yesterday, first attempt we got upside down but we got there in the end, all furled ready to use today, as it is best in light winds. We hadn’t got far out to sea when we realised we were roaring along and the wind was 18 knots, too much for the Gennaker, so we never managed to get it up.

We were aiming for Nonsuch bay again as Luke leaves tomorrow and Phoebe has a friend whose family are joining us on the boat tomorrow for lunch. Such a coincidence, Phoebs had sent her a happy Christmas message when we were last here in the bay and asked her what she was up to. She replied she was in Antigua, when she asked where, she replied the Nonsuch Resort.

The entrance to the bay through the reef, the way we departed, is not recommended for entering even though we saw a few cats doing it. We decided to go around and stay in a little bay off Green island at the other entrance. There were loads of day boats there, it has a lovely little beach and good snorkelling. We had a huge turtle circling round and round the boat. We finally got our hammock erected, a leaving present to Rowan. We got the inflatable paddle board out and Rowan and I used it to paddle over to the little beach near the reef. When we returned, we both tried standing up, I never managed to get upright once, it is so wobbly. Rowan lasted about a second upright. It’s definitely something we are going to have to work on! We were very pleased when the day boats all departed in the afternoon and peace descended, it was just 3 yachts for the night.

We had our lobster for supper, in a huge big salad which Phoebe prepared, really delicious and light and a good send off for Luke.
