Rowan and I went to the beach to snorkel around the rocky edges of the beaches as recommended by the Kellers. There were loads of lobsters and hundreds of little fish that looked stunning in the sunlight. It was lovely gentle snorkelling with the coral looking very healthy.

Peggy’s Rock right up at the highest point.
We waited for Phoebs to finish work and for it to cool down before attempting our hike up to Peggy’s Rock (also inspired by the Kellers!). Peggy is a local legend, she used to climb up there to spot fish for the fisherman, as she had incredible eyesight. We took JeldiJeldi and moored onto Jack’s (the beach bar) jetty. We luckily had Fat Man’s number who picked us up and took us to the start of the path on the other side of the mountain. He dropped us off in the baking heat and we started climbing between some houses where he had said we should head up. It was a very eroded track and we were soon wondering whether to turn left or right and had a few false turns, until we got onto the main path up in the dense bush. It was a real scrabble in places and no signage, but we continued up ……… we now understood why Fatman was surprised when we declined his offer of a guide! Phoebe’s Duke of Edinburgh skills kicked in as she led us up, and being so fit was having to do a lot of waiting for us to catch up. It was lovely walking in the unspoilt bush with lots of orchids and interesting plants. We finally got to the Rocks and the view did not disappoint. It was just after 4:30pm and dark clouds about, I did not want to be scrabbling over wet rocks up there so we did not hang about too long. We nearly took a wrong turn at one point, but eagle eyed Phoebs was behind us and spotted our mistake, we also lost the path at one point which she found for us after a bit of a scramble. Very exciting and hot walk, we were pleased to see Fat Man waiting for us a couple of hours later. Back to Jack’s for a refreshing drink and payment for keeping an eye on JeldiJeldi.

On our return to PolePole we washed our feet of sand, Rowan went downstairs and slipped spectacularly down the steps and really hit his knee. Thank goodness his back was fine, which was my major concern from the noise. Also lucky it wasn’t up on the mountain on all the rocks we were clambering over! It’s given him a very good excuse to be laid up with frozen peas on his knee! Like he says his scuppered heel with a chunk out of it was just healing nicely and his broken toe no longer hurting……so another injury was due!
