14th Jan – Cape Verde

ree

We made great progress overnight averaging between 8-9 knots with the Code sail up and winds in the low teens. Han claimed 13 knots of boat speed sometime in the early hours of the morning. We are hoping if we keep up these good speeds we may avoid the looming day of no wind on Sunday, and then we should be in the good Trade winds next week. Fingers crossed.

Great excitement at lunch when Han spotted land, a very volcanic looking mountain on the first Cape Verde island we passed. It’s very hazy here and difficult to see much on the horizon. We all spent a lot of money as we briefly got phone signal from the islands, Rowan managed to get the newspaper downloaded, what a treat that was! We had another wonderful sunset with an island beautifully lit up in the very red sky.

Amazingly we didn’t seen a single boat all day, no fishing boats or tankers which we expected as we cruised past at a very respectable 9-7 knots most of the day with the Code sail up. We had asked Phoebs to check out the refuelling situation in Cape Verde, just in case, but the consensus was we will be hitting the Trade winds shortly so we will press on. We didn’t want to refuel in the dark and delay ourselves by staying another day, plus there is always the concern of picking up dodgy fuel in these remote places. One more full day of heading south (we hope!) and then we turn left!
