Friday 23 August – very hot day in the marina

We had a terrible night’s sleep, the night was airless and very hot, which meant we got savaged by mozzies. There were a number of bloody marks on our sheets from mozzies we had managed to swat during the night! Anand our friendly taxi driver was waiting for me at 8:45am to take me to my appointment with the ENT doc. We got to the hospital early and I had quite a wait, as my doc was late. He explained he had got the bus, as it was more relaxing than driving himself the four hours from Suva (the capital). The bus had stopped along the way, he got off to get a snack and found the bus took off without him, with all his gear on the bus. He managed to get a taxi to chase the bus and got back on. It is interesting as the hospital seems to be staffed by mainly Fijians, my doc is the only member of staff wearing a sulu (traditional skirt for the men). He checked my original ear and that was good, but now my other ear is very infected. He did another swab to confirm that the antibiotics are the correct ones for the bacteria. He managed to clean out my ear with the micro suction machine, which at least makes my ear feel more comfortable. I’m back on strong antibiotics and ear drops! Ugh such a pain not being able to swim in this hot weather.

After that I went to the market to get some fruit, vegetables and eggs. Always fun seeing what local produce is on sale. I got back to the boat to find Rowan stuck into some boat maintenance, he had the steps off and was doing a much needed rust removal…… very impressive especially in this heat!

We had a wonderful sighting of two little green parrot finches, on the bank next to us, They have a bright red head and tail, making them very smart. Sadly the Indian Mynah birds soon chased them off.

Rowan had a company to come around in the afternoon to quote for more solar panels, and to do a few odd jobs. A very jolly Indian husband and wife team, who are highly thought of, which means they are very booked up. We went to the marina restaurant for supper again, and landed up chatting to an interesting NZ couple. He is a marine motor mechanic and has worked all over the world, quite a bit of work for NZ Navy in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. He had stories about the terrible corruption in both places.

I managed to get our mosquito nets into the windows and got the Dyson fan out in preparation for a much more comfortable night! We will head off tomorrow.

The market

The very quaint narrow gauge railway that winds all over the place, through the little farms and villages

The train only carries sugar cane
