Friday 4 October – Lovely sail up north

We had lovely gentle wind around 10 knots and were able to have a gentle sail all the way up to Blue Lagoon Resort where Carol and Tim catch the ferry from tomorrow. It was another ferociously hot day, but very enjoyable sailing in such great conditions. There were a few boats out today with their sails up. We had Tim, a very conscientious captain guiding us between the reef and land and the other sailing boats. Along the way we were so happy to discover we had dolphins escorting us, riding in our bow wave, always looking like they are having such fun. We counted about 10 of them, one youngster sticking very close to mum.

We headed into the anchorage at the Blue Lagoon resort, apparently the film was filmed just across the bay, you can see where they got the name from as the water is an incredible colour. There were three other boats anchored and two we have met before, makes you realise how small the cruising community is. The one boat is the NZ Cat Kindred Spirit, who came to our rescue in the Lau islands when we jammed our anchor chain in the windlass. They came to say hello, they have been in a remote area further north and had just come here to pick up fresh provisions from a company called Farm Boy who deliver goods on the daily ferry. What a brilliant service, I was quickly onto it as we are down to our last few vegetables. They arranged to have the goods on the Ferry that Carol and Tim are catching tomorrow.

We headed into the resort in the evening hoping to have a last meal with Carol and Tim on land. Sadly they couldn’t take us but we could have drinks. It was the most incredible sunset, I’m always thinking they can’t get better, but this was truly spectacular. We returned to PolePole where Tim insisted on being given free reign in the kitchen and produced a delicious lamb curry. We have certainly managed to put a big dent in the wine supply!
