Phil got 32 flying fish off the deck this morning before I had even got up. I went straight back to bed at 6am when my shift was over. I just got to witness all the fish scales that are lying everywhere, one came right into the saloon area.
Otherwise a very straight forward steady sail today, with the winds still in the high teens we are averaging 9.6 knots boat speed which is good going. We want to keep up this good speed as the weather models look more set for Saturday afternoon having some nasty weather. We want to get into Opua marina in the Bay of Islands before then. We can check into NZ here, last time when we came from Tonga, we checked into Whangarei which is further South.
Rowan slow cooked the pork knuckles today with some tinned chorizo in cider that I bought in the Canary Islands (it is ok kids, they were still within date!). With the addition of some beans and aubergine, it was an excellent tasty dish. We have enough left over for one more meal and the rest we chucked overboard as we can’t take pork of any description into NZ.
I’m on shift now until midnight and we have left Sporty Spice (the Code Zero sail) up. We have quite a few squalls about so I need to be on the ball!

The night time Navigation station, we sit in the dark so we can see outside

I never took any photos today so thought I would include this as it shows our progress, we are getting closer to NZ, even if we are out in the middle of the deep blue sea. We are picking up two boats on our chart but too far away for us to see
