Thursday 28 November – tacking our way to Waihike island

We got going before 7am as we knew it was going to be a long sail tacking to get to Waihike island, about 40 miles away. We will just overnight there as we are going into the Auckland Viaduct marina right in the middle of the city the following day, we wanted to be closer in.

Once we got out the narrow little passage to sea we had good winds in the mid teens, not from a great direction, so we had to tack back and forth, but it was very pleasant sailing. We just pootled along all day, getting into the anchorage at Waihike around 5pm. Amazingly we spotted two boats we knew in the anchorage. Rowan has an important work call in the morning so we had an early night.

Little Barrier Island lit up by sun with it’s table cloth of clouds and white cliffs. It is a reserve that requires a permit to visit, they have a cap of 600 visitors a year – because of the steep cliffs it is difficult to get on land, it is free of predators, so it really is a wildlife sanctuary

We were boarded as soon as we had the anchor down!
