Saturday 7 December – staying put in Coralie Bay

Having checked the weather and wind we decided to stay here until tomorrow, we were surprised to find all the other boats had left by mid morning. We went for a good walk in the morning, up to the top of the cliffs over looking the entrance to the bay. Walking back along the beach we met a group of eight youngsters, turns out they are all staying at the farm for two weeks doing volunteer work, mainly looking for invasive Argentinian ants! The island has an association with the Department of Conservation, they have eradicated rats and cats. We walked past the nesting gulls with Benji under strict control. The gulls were very brave, one or two came dive bombing Benji, much to his annoyance. There were also a few nesting dotterel which are now severely threatened in NZ, as they have been savaged by predators.

We had another walk in the evening for Benji, with glorious low sunlight lighting up the beach and cliffs. We were just having sunset drinks on the back of the boat when we were joined in the bay by another sailing boat. It was a smaller catamaran than us, we counted eleven people on board, we wondered where they all slept? We had a great start to the evening with oysters and champagne which Tim and Carol had bought. Followed by a BBQ on the boat, it was a lovely balmy evening.
