Another very rocky night, woke up facing a completely different direction. The weather app was showing three and a half meter waves, and winds over 40 knots. What a relief to have another day in our hire car. The waves around Pole Pole were pretty big as we left, luckily we were all in wet gear as we got soaked getting to the little dinghy dock. After a few little chores, restocking at the chandlery, dropping off our large pile of laundry, we headed south.
We went to a quaint little town called Clarence Town, the biggest on the island. Of course it was dominated by two enormous churches each with competing twin towers. They must be a hugely god fearing population judging by the amount of churches here. Sam had found a recommendation for a restaurant at the lighthouse point. It turned out to be a marina on the west side of the island – the sea was a spectacle, it was a fury of white horses. Some of the wave spray was showing up from behind the land on the other side of the bay. Hate to think how big those waves were. It’s mainly a fishing marina but it did have two brave yachts moored up, and one more uncomfortable, bouncing yacht anchored.

After delicious fish tacos we headed back passing the usual derelict buildings, churches and gambling houses! We were told that the population of the north of the island has dropped from 700 to 20 which is a bit depressing. However they are the friendliest most polite people we have ever met.
After picking up our laundry which was an absolute bargain at $17 for 3 big loads washed, tumbled and folded , we headed to the good supermarket to do some provisioning before handing back the car. Thank goodness the wind had died down for our return to Pole Pole, as we had all our lovely clean washing and big bags of groceries.
Very fittingly, the clouds disappeared and we were able to have our last Gin sundowners with Sam before he leaves early tomorrow morning. Our 3rd night of shithead (card game), poor old captain seems to be wearing the crown the most!
