Sunday 5 January – back to Auckland

We got going promptly as the forecast was for strong winds in the afternoon, we wanted to avoid them going into the marina. We had to motor the whole way as we headed straight into the wind, the sea was pretty flat so it was a pretty comfortable passage. Of course as we got nearer to Auckland around midday the wind arrived early and steadily picked up. We contacted the marina and they very kindly sent a dinghy out and had someone on the pontoon to catch the lines. It was an easy berth to get into but with the wind it was a little tricky, we have such high sides that they catch a lot of wind. We were grateful for the marina dinghy wedging itself in between a gin palace and us. We are the smallest boat by a large margin, quite fun to be in the hustle and bustle of the city, plenty of opportunity for people watching. It was a grey and wet day.

In the afternoon we went to the Maritime museum just along from where we were in the Viaduct marina. Rowan’s read so many books about various boating heroes, the museum brought some of it to life. The museum contains a NZ boat that won the America’s cup. We landed up going out for a good seafood meal on the harbour front, it took us a little bit of walking for us to find a place we liked the look of.

Heading into the city

The water was incredibly busy with boats

Great contrast of the old and new buildings, with good reflections in the modern glass buildings

PolePole well secured in the grey weather
