We had a very calm departure from the marina and managed all on our own, without anyone doing the lines for us! It was pretty straight forward, as soon as we were out, the sails were up and we had a lovely gentle sail along the bottom of Waiheke Island. We had planned to go to the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsular, as we have not been there yet, but the wind blew against us. It did not look like we would get a comfortable anchorage with the wind, and we hear they are currently pretty crowded over the peak summer season.
We found a protected spot at the top of Ponui Island. The first bay we looked at was a bit crowded so we moved to the next bay along which wasn’t as protected but perfectly comfortable for us. The wind roared down in gusts lasting only minutes, we were fine but the two little monohulls near us bobbed around like corks. very pleased to be in our fat squat cat!
The land is privately owned and farmed so we only had access to the beach. We admired it from the boat, I enjoyed watching a very curious calf walk right down the beach at low tide to the water, it looked like he was trying to drink it but couldn’t understand why it wasn’t tasting right!

Leaving Auckland behind

Our anchorage

Picturesque bay, with the NZ dazzling blue sky

Gorgeous beaches, the rocks in the water were totally submerged when we arrived, luckily I had spotted the small black cross on the charts showing them
