I was up for my shift at 6am, it was a stunning sunrise, the sun started beating into the saloon area making it roasting hot so early in the day. No cooked breakfast today as we finished our last eggs yesterday (100 eggs we started with!). Breakfast was granola with Muden pecan nuts, delicious dry ginger Widge had left with me, and our home made yoghurt. All washed down with some home made bread and marmalade.
It is funny we have all slotted into our routines, it even feels a little strange that tomorrow it will all be over and no more shifts. Scary Spice has been pushing us along for 2 days now as we do a slow zig zag line to our destination.
It was a quiet day, and excitement was averted as a frayed line was spotted just before it broke. The strain on these sheets (ropes in my language) is phenomenal. Two ropes rubbing for a day will saw through each other.
After our afternoon tea and the last of Phoebe’s florentines, the wind started to die. The forecast had predicted the doldrums to hit the Marquesas tomorrow and we fear it has come early. Rowan and Nevil rigged up a very Heath Robinson set up, the main down with Scary and Sporty Spice flying wing on wing. It didn’t seem to improve the speed much and Rowan was worried about taking it down at night, so the decision was made to put Ginger Spice (Wingaker) up. Rowan is pretty disenchanted with her as it is very slow in these low winds, but we really don’t have much option. News comes in that at least 5 boats have arrived in Hiva Oa and anchored. It wasn’t long before we had the engines on!
Our final mocktails, we were all relishing the thought that tomorrow we could have an alcoholic drink, although Han and Megan were adamant they didn’t want the crossing to end!
