Saturday 8 April – Swedish Easter celebrations

So lovely to have a really restful day. In the morning we were warned over the vhf that the Swedish witches would be visiting boats, similar to Halloween dressing up and exchanging cards for sweets! Hamish came along with the little girl Adina (3 years old) from Salt (her dad is the 70 something owner of Salt!). The other 3 kids are from Blue Sunshine, all blonde bombshells! They were very cute, we surprised them by wearing masks ourselves, I have a few made by the San Blas ladies. Rowan did some very scary witch calling on the vhf which was very funny. Hannah and Megan rustled up some parcels full of sweets, luckily we have a half eaten packet of Gummy Bears and a few chocolates. I think they will have done very well by the end of the day, another 2 Arc boats have arrived, their baskets, kettles will be overflowing by the end of their visits.

Midday we snorkelled from the boat to the shallow reef area and saw plenty. Highlights were a huge orange octopus who had made a collection of shells around him, but he was extremely coy and managed to disappear into the centre of the coral head out of sight. Also two very smart big Grouper fish fighting for a spot under the overhang from some coral, his mouth was enormous when he fought of an intruder, the size of a side plate! The girls also saw a big shark just resting under the coral. The light was fantastic and we did a huge big long loop from the boat.

We invited Pippin for supper as their daughter Fleur is returning to Holland and we wont see her again. We then got a call from Blue Sunshine asking if we could fill their tanks with water as their water maker has broken. This meant that they will raft up with us and we will transfer the water via a hosepipe. We thought we better invite them for supper too in that case. We managed to rustle up a huge coleslaw, bean salad and a bulgar wheat dish with sausage, aubergine, feta and pecan nuts. Blue sunshine have their grandfather on board, plus the 3 kids, so 14 for supper! It was a very jolly evening with lots of good stories, good rum cocktails and wine flowing. We landed up with Blue Sunshine rafted onto us over night, it is amazing how strong our anchor is, to hold two big boats. We are all planning to depart at 5am to get slack tide out of the atoll as we all head to our next destinations. Pippin, Blue Sunshine and Salt are all heading to Fakarava, one of the bigger atolls, and we plan to go to the smaller Kauehi and then we head to Fakarava after a few days, where Hannah and Megan fly home from on the 18th.
