Sunday 9 April – Baby Spice works hard on Easter Sunday

5am we were all up but it was still too dark to navigate our way through the water so we sat and waited for the sun to come up and give better light to see the bommies. The anchor held us well last night although a gust in the middle of the night that swung us around did wake us up at about 2am.

Finally we all set off in a line, Pippin in the lead and us bringing up the rear as the only Catamaran! We got through the bommies successfully and out through the passage which still had water racing through at 4 knots. Blue Sunshine were so confident they came through with their big sail up.

With Sporty Spice up, a good wind angle and wind in the high teens, we were soon taking off and leaving the others behind. A few hours later the wind was coming from right behind us, so we got Baby Spice, our tiny spinnaker up and we have been comfortably pootling along with her ever since. We were not going that fast but that is perfect as we enter the Kauehi atoll at midday, and do not want to have to bob around like we did entering Roroia.

We are all pretty tired from our early start and almost forgot it was Easter Sunday. We managed to get hold of Luke and Phoebe. Luke is at home with my niece’s family enjoying an Easter hunt in the castle ruins in good Gormley tradition. Phoebs is at a friend’s family out in the country side enjoying a gourmet week end. She starts her new big venture with her Accelerator program starting on Tuesday, she has a very intense time ahead of her back in London where the program is taking place.

I managed to rustle up a chocolate cake made with bits of dark chocolate, ground almond and chopped ginger. It felt like a real treat with our afternoon tea. Everyone was finished dinner and off to bed by 7pm as we got back into our shifts for the night. Megan had the 6-9pm before I took over, I managed to go and sleep outside in the blissfully cool breeze for an hour before taking over my shift.
