Friday 14 April – drift snorkelling the passage

A few chores done and then we went snorkelling in the passage, it was so hot and still, ideal conditions and a relief to be in the water for a couple of hours. We did a drift snorkel firstly on the far bank, then we crossed over and came back down the other side as the current changed. We were greeted immediately by quite a few nosey black tipped reef sharks. The coral looked good to me, every square inch covered, but rowan thinks a lot of it is dead. There were loads of fish and quite a few we have not seen before. It was a stunning snorkel in idyllic conditions, we had a wonderful time.

On the way back to PolePole we stopped off at the dive centre to book in for supper tomorrow and to book Rowan and the girls onto the dive to the wall of sharks which happens at the entrance to the passage. I don’t dive and quite honestly have seen enough sharks for comfort!

A restful afternoon on the boat with all fans blowing as it was so hot, no wind makes it so much hotter. In the evening ‘Lover of the Light’ (American Arc boat) organised a big beach bonfire and drinks. The kids were in heaven roasting marshmallows. Some of the non Arc boats anchored, joined us. Always fascinating stories, the one Catamaran is Swedish and the couple are Circus performers with their 3 young kids, taking a year out. The other is a French couple living on their boat for 6 years, half the year in the Tuamotus islands and the other 6 months in the Society islands. They have 3 year old twins on board, who have never lived on land!
