Slow day in Bequia

We got our water maker motor back, it’s been repaired which is good news as it means we have a spare again (we are going through them rather quickly!). We had a refrigeration guy on board to sort out the fridge as it keeps on icing up. He was a very interesting character, a very respectable businessman, very switched on, until we got onto vaccines (Rowan’s favourite interrogation of the locals!). He was very anti, mainly he said for historical reasons, when in the 70’s, pharmaceutical companies used the Caribbean as guinea pigs for certain vaccines with serious repercussions. Rowan asked if it was reassuring seeing all the white-ies being vaccinated and he said it wasn’t really. When Rowan told him we were from S Africa his ears pricked up, he is a follower of Malema (for you Brits he is the SA firebrand whose favourite slogan is one settler one bullet, a really scary character). He wasn’t too impressed we likened Malema to Trump, a populist, stinking rich claiming to be the saviour of the poor. Fascinating that he should follow the politics of S Africa.

Late afternoon we went for a walk to the old fort look out that we visited when we first arrived. A good walk up and down in the setting sun.

In the evening we took Pete and Libby out for supper as they had brought Rowan’s new sail from Antigua. They are an English couple we met entering Antigua, they had just crossed the Atlantic and were checking in at their first landfall. They are doing charters and have been in Antigua until now. Tough time for them to be chartering with so few people about. We went to Mac’s, 3 of us had very good mutton curry (with loads of coconut), Libby is a strict Vegan. A fun evening catching up on all their news, quite a late night which is why I’ve been so slow on the blog!

View from across the bay

The local boats I love.

Fascinating how we all know about Hamilton after the hit musical.

View across to the split islands!

Sunset up at the fort

View back to Port Elizabeth

Love this old house, the detail on the one wooden shutter, the colours, and the drain pipe system off the roof into the two tanks.

Bread fruit tree

This guy was taking his enormous King fish home that he had just caught

Such a beautiful fish with incredible little fins running all the way down its body, all pointing different directions.
