Jump Up at Basil’s Bar

Woke up to a lovely day and decided to go snorkelling over the island at the beach cafe. We had managed to climb the steep path up the hill behind the shops, passed the quaint island library and primary school and we were just crossing the end of the airstrip when we were apprehended by security. New rules from last year mean we cannot walk around the island any more and we are only allowed around the village and the one beach. A big disappointment and we just think how lucky we were on our many trips to Mustique last year when we walked around the entire island. it’s possible there is a celebrity on the island and security is tightened.

We consoled ourselves with a bit of retail therapy in the Pink House, it has lovely linen clothes with wonderful designs created by the island doctor’s wife. Rowan was not part of this purchasing party, I bought him a wonderful Frigate bird shirt, a lucky belated anniversary present. We joined him for the rest of the afternoon on the beach that we are allowed on.

I walked back to town ahead of everyone to go and exchange a purchase for Phoebs, I had got the wrong colour hat for her! On the way I had a wonderful interaction with an Osprey, I noticed his shadow coming over me and then he perched on a palm leaf right above me.

Further along I came across a pair of fighting iguanas which was quite a tussle, a local came by and assured me they were not fighting but mating!

Tonight is Jump Up night at Basil’s bar, it is famous for its music, so we decided to go there for a second night in a row. We were just getting ready when Johnny noticed the dinghy heading off to Panama, Rowan got his new Frigate Bird shirt off in a flash and jumped in to rescue it. Thank goodness it was spotted as any further from the boat we would have struggled to get it back!

Basil’s bar filled up and was heaving by 9pm, it looked absolutely full, the busiest we have ever seen it, which of course gives it a good buzz. Jayne Anne and Ashok joined us again, we had a very jolly evening with lots of dancing. There were lots of English public school teenagers around, it must be half term. Basil, who we think must be Basil Mark 2, was around in his Pink House shirt, with a bevy of woman around him. An english woman about our age took to the stage to belt out a song, she has obviously done it before, it will remain a mystery if she was anyone famous!
