Friday 10 January – a visit to the bird island Tiritiri Matangi

In the morning we headed over to the island reserve of Tiritiri Matangi, it is uninhabited and famous for it’s birds. Just leaving Manly beach we were surprised to pass a fishing boat that had been deposited high and dry on top of some rocks. We wondered what the story was there.

We got to Tiritiri, the anchorage was packed but we managed to squeeze in. It is the first time the weather has been calm enough for us to go there and loads of people must have had exactly the same thought. We went for a lovely circular walk up to the lighthouse, the paths were not too busy and the birdlife was great. There were endless bird noises, helped by the fact that they had special bird feeders scattered around the island.

We left after lunch and had a very gentle sail across to Kawau island where we have stayed before. The Mansion House anchorage was heaving and the rest of the deep bay was chock a block too. Quite unbelievable, about 10 times more boats than last time. It is the last week end of the holiday season, so we assume everyone was taking advantage of the good weather. We anchored at a bay that was quite far out but less crowded. We headed to the boat club for supper which was a good reputation for Fish and Chips, and the only place to eat on the island. We had a very good meal, glad to get a table as the place was packed, we were all finished by 8pm so that Rowan could make his 9pm work call!
