We left Sandy Lane Marina with Rowan feeling a lot happier it was only $100 a night after all, he had got the facts wrong. We departed knowing it was going to be a rough crossing to Mustique. The swell is big, the wind is up and we are heading straight into the wind. Rowan hugged the lee of Canouan to give us a bit more calmer water, when we rounded the headland the waves started hitting us from every direction. It was very confused seas and not very comfy for the first hour. We finally had calmer waters heading into Mustique, when we got protection from the island. It took us nearly 3 hours to get here, and our friends from El Graucho boat waved us in. There is only one other yacht, it is wonderful to have it so empty. You are not allowed to anchor anywhere around the island, you have to use their mooring balls which are only at the main harbour in Britannia Bay.

Construction site for the development of the rest of the marina houses around the hill. Rowan said the reception desk said they will ultimately flatten and get rid of the hill entirely!

Our view from our mooring ball
Once settled on our ball we headed into town, Rowan and Phoebs tried to go alone to do a bit of birthday shopping, but I was not about to be left on the boat. So we all went in and I went and did some grocery shopping. It is a very quaint little village, with the shops and facilities all housed in lovely colourful buildings.

The famous Basil’s Bar…..Princess Margaret’s favourite bar

Gorgeous beach in the village

This tortoise has cottoned on to the fact that this is a good shop to pick up tasty morsels

Phoebe escorting a different tortoise across the road. It was playing chicken with the golf cabs (no cars allowed on the island, just a few trucks)

I love their homemade colourful boats

After a wonderful sunset we headed into Basil’s bar to join Jack and Silvena from El Graucho. They leave tomorrow having spent 6 days here, which they have really enjoyed. There were quite a few tables taken at the bar, and one big crowd of bohemian looking thirty something Europeans having a very good time, we noticed towards the end there was a very distinctive aroma of weed. For one of our bookclub books early last year we read Anne Glenconner’s book, Lady in Waiting – it’s fascinating seeing the island after reading all about it. Her husband set the island up as a private enterprise, and she was Lady in Waiting to Princess Margaret who had a house here.

Basil’s Bar

A lot of empty tables, it obviously caters for a lot of people normally
