Sunday 20 August – Chilly snorkelling trip

It poured with rain during the night which was a bit of a surprise. It is definitely cooler, it is winter after all – we’ve even had a blanket out! The wind swung round 180 degrees and we had all sorts of new noises, Rowan on one trip outside to the deck, could hear whales really close by, he just couldn’t see them with the torch. I slept through it all!

We had a very slow start to the day, the intention was to clean PolePole’s bottom with Kane, but Rowan cancelled it because of the rain, which was rather nice as we got a long lie in. At lunchtime the rain had stopped the sun was around and the wind had died a little so we decided to go to one of the attractions here called Sting Ray City. It was a few miles away on the inside of the reef with the passage helpfully marked. As we had hoped there were not too many boats at lunch time. We had about half an hour snorkelling with Black tipped sharks and Sting rays, on a very sandy bank. The sting rays had some pretty impressive tails and were very tame, I suspect they have been fed as they hover around the boats. It was a very chilly ride back as the wind is so much colder than the water temperature.

Off snorkelling, the black and white marker showing us the passage – you can see the dark patches of coral in the water

A lazy late afternoon reading the Sunday papers, so sad to hear the Lionesses were defeated by Spain.
