Wednesday 20 September – making good progress

We are doing well, the waves have calmed down to about 2.8ms and the time between them is longer, so not quite so choppy. The wind has dropped to high teens for most of the day, making it much more comfortable than yesterday. It is still pretty intense out there with these waves, but the boat handles them well. Just before sunrise – around 5:30am we got Sporty Spice out and put the jib away. We need to keep up a good speed, to get into Samoa before the big weather system moves in on Friday. Our average speed has dropped to 8.5 compared to 9.4 yesterday.

As I write this evening on the first shift, the wind has crept up into the 20’s which was predicted. We are quite happy about it as we want to keep up a good speed. We took Sporty Spice down and we’re back sailing with the jib. We still have our 2 reefs in the mainsail, which is very comforting.

Otherwise we take it in turns to snooze on the bed in the cockpit during the day and the time seems to fly by. I cooked a rolled shoulder of lamb in the slow cooker for 7 hours, for supper, which was delicious and a nice change for us. The smells were driving Rowan crazy all day.

We knew we had a stow away on board as I had seem some tiny watery poops, today I found him, a little ghecko – poor chap must be having the ride of his life and wandering what alien land he has found. Rowan spotted a Boobie sleeping near the helm station last night, he had his head tucked under his wing and appeared to be fast asleep. However the mess we found this morning, it appears he wasn’t just sleeping – he was using us as a poop stop!

Just checked the charts and we have dropped below the 200 mile mark to get to Samoa. We will arrive in the dark tomorrow night, apparently it is an easy anchorage, thick mud and no bommies! Perfect for us.

Lovely sunset
