Thursday 28 September – we are off to Tonga

This is the best weather window for us to get to Tonga before another big weather system comes by, we can’s stay here another week as it starts impacting getting to NZ in November. We feel we had a great taste of Samoa, and it has definitely been a highlight. Rowan always the early bird brought me my tea before 7am and engines were on. A mad dash to get up and respectable, farewell to Paul and Liz, permission from the Harbour master to go through the channel, and we were off.

We headed north up past the Ferry terminal and came around the top of the island which was much more comfortable than heading into the wind and waves had we gone immediately south. The swell was still pretty big and choppy in between the chain of islands between Upolu and Savai’i. Once we were through to the other side we had a very nice comfortable sail with consistent wind in the mid teens, what a pleasure. Still quite bumpy as the waves were big. Rowan was happy as the wind was forecast to die but kept on going until the early morning shift when the engines went on. The fullish moon was such a treat for our night shifts, so much better than inky darkness.

Some lovely looking remote beaches, just tricky to get to

Savai’i in the far distance on the right

An amazing looking crater by the looks of things

A lovely sunset
