Friday 15 August – thunder storms and rain, we are in the SPCZ (South Pacific Convergence Zone)

So much rain about and big thunderstorms all evening and night, way too much lightening for our liking. We are in the zone where the Monsoon winds meet the Trade winds, which produces the rain and storms. Rowan went out for a snorkel in the pass with Kruno and Claudettte in the morning, it was too rough for me, I’m very glad I didn’t go, it was not that pleasant as the water was all churned up and the visibility was poor. They did see some big fish though and some dolphins but not to swim with.

My ability to not buy carvings from the carvers in their boats was not successful. We need to hang on to all the Solomon dollars we have left now, this lovely bowl with an octopus lid was irresistible! I managed to find a few items to trade with him and his wife, who claimed her grandfather came from England – a Wilmot. I landed up giving them $20 US as the money part. Goodness knows where they will find a money exchanger, but they were very happy!

Claudette came over in the afternoon for route planning. There is an 18 mile route through the lagoon to the other side of the main island, in some places narrowing to the size of a big river between land. It is meant to be quite impressive, Luc from yesterday gave Rowan a route planner as it is quite a wiggle through shallow waters and reefs. Luc left this morning, heading south. Kruno and Anthony decided they would join us too, so we all planned for a 7am departure tomorrow. We are aiming for the town Noro where we will refuel, reprovision and check out of the Solomon Islands.

White out!

Rain moving across

This boat stopped by for a chat, we gave them some rice and tinned meat, they sang for us in return. We think he must have been the priest, he assigned who was alto and soprano, the ladies were in a choir and had come from a funeral, they were on their way home. They are Seventh Day Adventists, the good thing is they don’t allow chewing beetle nut and as a result have lovely teeth!

A rough idea of our route tomorrow between the islands, looks quite challenging but interesting
