Friday 9 August – Wendy and Phil leave

We all had a good lie in. Wendy and Phil fly back to NZ early tomorrow and already had a night booked at a resort nearby. They packed up and did an excellent clean up of their hull, Phil repaired some of the floor hatches too. At last I managed to do loads of laundry, so we were all busy.

The marina is pretty hot and loads of boats were coming and going. There was a big motor launch with a Chinese couple next to us, who had a monumental argument last night, so we were very relieved to see them go this morning. We were feeling a little overwhelmed by screeching ladies as the Dutch boat on the other side of us had a lady shouting at her partner and what is obviously her stepson and friend. Those boys mopped, and cleaned that boat all day long, appearing to clean the same deck at least 3 times! Maybe downstairs was too unbearable! Then to our horror the harbour master, who is a very impressive Fijian lady, came to help an enormous Cat come in, where the motor launch had been. She warned us that the old couple driving the huge cat were crazy, which alarmed us as we saw it attempting to reverse in. I paced out the space left in the berth for it, which was 9m – Rowan googled the boat dimensions which said the cat was 10m wide, we finally convinced the harbour master it was not going to work. Phew!

Later in the day a big monohull came into the space with 6 Aussie men on board, they came in at speed with their back flap open, realising their mistake they raised it, only to find they had a ladder out and the whole thing was crunching, at the same time as scraping the side of his boat. All a bit tense. What a bunch of old men, Rowan said it was male banter, but it sounded really tedious, every minute of their evening was being scheduled to a time that had to be voted on, including dressing and showers!

In the evening we went for supper over to the resort that Wendy and Phil were staying at. It was right next door, but a long walk around so we clambered through fences and rubble to walk along the beach to get there, only possible at low tide. We had a fun evening with local Fijian singing and dancing. We said our final farewells to Wendy and Phil who had been very good easy company.

Everyone wondering how on earth this fat cat was going to squeeze in next to us

A full and busy marina
