Mutton Fest!

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

We were hoping for a lie in as we have no agenda until the winds die down, which looks like sometime late next week. However we heard at the pub last night that there is a farmers market today and a Mutton Festival - an annual highlight of the calendar for Long Island, the only island with sheep. So we headed off early-ish to make sure we could get some fresh produce. It was a very long dingy ride in Jeldi Jeldi and obviously a little early for the Festival, so we walked a mile or so to the Farmer's market, which was very quaint and local. Genuine local produce from Bahamian plots. We stocked up on greens, Arugula, chard and local salad leaves that looked like ivy leaves. Other highlights were lots of little pawpaws, green banana lady's fingers (excellent for ripening on the boat), guava jam, lovely eggs and a few spicy salts and sauces.

We returned to the mutton fest which was hotting up slightly.... had an early lunch of mutton stew, fish and grits, and lobster salad. All so delicious, accompanied by pumping calypso/reggae style music.

An afternoon nap was calling, and it was a very splashy trip back to the boat.

After hours of relaxing we decided to hire a car for the next two days to do a bit of exploring on the island as we wait out the big blow. Finally a car was found, just a local guy hiring out his car, so Phoebs and Sam went to pick it up and drove it around to Tiny's Hurricane Hole where we had supper for the second night in a row. We all had delicious Hog fish which was freshly in, washed down with a rum punch and home cooked key lime pie. All so good, such a treat!
